David Ortiz and Ryan Howards are having pretty equivalent seasons. Both have hit over 50 HRs. Both lead their leagues in RBI by a wide margin. Howard’s got a decent lead in SLG, partly thanks to a better AVG, but their OBPs are both in the low .400s.
So why is Ryan Howard running away with the popular MVP vote while David Ortiz is on the fringe? Ortiz even deserves extra credit for his clutchiness. Is it simply because Howard’s team is in the playoff chase? Is it because Ortiz has missed time recently? Is it because of Ortiz’s self-serving comments that may or may not have been taken out of context?
I can’t think of anything else. I don’t have a point here, I just find it strange that two guys with similar performances are getting such different backing. Am I missing something. Personally, I think Ortiz is about fifth in the AL, while Howard should be third or fourth in the NL.
