Did you catch it? Did you see Jason Varitek pull a Willis Reed and spark the Red Sox to victory tonight? Not only did he clobber a homer in his first game back [ed: actually, his third game back], but his unsurpassed gumption and leadership prompted a six-run outburst in the bottom of the eighth, which erased a five run Tampa Bay lead and put the Sox up by one for good*.
Do you know how many times the Red Sox came back from a five run deficit to win when Varitek’s leadership was on the DL? None. Zip. Zero. Zilch. Nada. Null. Never. [ed: Actually, I didn’t bother to check this fact, so it might not be true.] And on the night of this historic comeback, what did the Yankees get from Derek Jeter? Worse than nothing — he gave up 10 runs to a mediocre Baltimore offense. With Varitek bringing back the swagger to Boston, Jeter needed to make a statement and failed to do so.
*Scrap everything, Timlin blew Varitek’s mojo. Damn that Jeter guy’s good.
