For those that are interested, here’s my extended ballot for AL MVP, going 25 deep, position players only. What are the TOT numbers? They’re a combination of hitting and fielding that I’ve been working on in the lab. Do I have a full explanation? Nope, that’s coming, though. Am I done tweaking the numbers in the lab? Nope, not yet. Are these numbers worth anything at all? Yes, I think so.

I will give a warning about the fielding numbers, though. Fielding runs are from Justin’s THT +/- system, which is pretty good but can miss on outfielders, especially center fielders, and doesn’t include catcher ratings, arm ratings, or double-play ratings. If you prefer to make your own fielding judgments, I’ve included runs-above-replacement-position (RARP), which includes everything but how well each player plays their own position.

If you think these numbers are bullsh*t, I’m ok with that for now. Just treat it as my own unsubstantiated MVP ballot.

TOT	RARP	Player
103	69	Granderson, Curtis
91	97	Rodriguez, Alex
97	64	Suzuki, Ichiro
76	65	Pena, Carlos
75	80	Ordonez, Magglio
69	69	Posada, Jorge
67	68	Ortiz, David
46	64	Sizemore, Grady
56	57	Martinez, Victor
55	44	Polanco, Placido
53	68	Guerrero, Vladimir
48	44	Roberts, Brian
47	37	Rios, Alex I
41	38	Figgins, Chone
40	40	Thome, Jim
40	27	Kinsler, Ian M
40	38	Swisher, Nick T
40	23	Glaus, Troy
39	27	Damon, Johnny
37	22	Kotchman, Casey
37	32	Cano, Robinson
36	40	Upton, B.J.
36	38	Matsui, Hideki
35	31	Sheffield, Gary
34	21	Ellis, Mark

Notice that I moved a couple players “out of order” — that’s to account for fielding talent that I think Justin’s system misses.

Do I really think Granderson’s fielding talent is that good — enough to catch ARod? Not sure, but I figured I’d leave him up there just to get that discussion going.

Do I really think Carlos Pena was that valuable? Yes, he was a beast at the plate and really good in the field.

Where’s Derek Jeter, some might ask? Sitting at 16 runs above replacement level overall, tied with Alex Gordon.

My National League ballot is coming later today.
