The Tulo vs. Braun debate comes down to how you value their offensive and defensive contributions. For now, I want your opinion on defensive value, which has two components:
- Relative Ability: Was Braun good, average, bad, or super bad?
- Value Scale: Is “bad” -5 runs, -15 runs, or -50 runs?
Here’s what I want from you. In the comments, fill out the following ballot, first rating each listed player on their fielding talent relative to position. 1 is awful, like combining Mo Vaughn’s range with Chuck Knoblauch’s arm. 9 is awesome, like combining Juan Pierre’s speed with Vlad’s arm. Second, state how many runs above or below average, each rating point represents. For example, 7/10 might be +10 runs while 1/10 might be -50 runs. I don’t care if you have no idea. Just vote. I didn’t see the “above average” when writing my runs production. lets give this another try.
Give a runs value for each rating, 0 being average:
1/9:-20
3/9:-10
5/9: 0
7/9:15
9/9: 40
see its confusing, cuz up above it says runs above average, but here its says “runs value”. hmm, i seem to have noticed the above average part for the negative numbers though

Mind you this is pure speculation, since I saw about 6 games of Tulowitzki this year, and 0 of Albert Pujols, and for fuck’s sake the last time I watched Ozzie play I’m pretty sure I thought girls were “yucky”, but:
Troy Tulowitzky: 8
Ryan Braun: 2
Scott Rolen: 7
Albert Pujol: 8
Derek Jeter: 3
Mike Piazza: 3
Pudge Rodriguez: 7
Ryan Howard: 2
Ozzie Smith: 7
Manny Ramirez: 3

Ahh, I give it a try …
Rank 1 to 9, where 5 Is Average:
Troy Tulowitzky: 7
Ryan Braun: 2
Scott Rolen: 7
Albert Pujol: 7
Derek Jeter: 2
Mike Piazza: 2
Pudge Rodriguez: 6
Ryan Howard: 3
Ozzie Smith: 8

Runs relative to average for each rating where 0 is average:
1/9:-30
3/9: -15
5/9: 0
7/9: 15
9/9: 30
It’s kind of tough trying to put all positions on the same scale … i.e., like Piazza is probably a 1 or 2 as a catcher, but I’m not sure he’s 30 runs below average. Yadier Molina may be a 8-9 but he surely isn’t +30 runs. Anyhow, It’ll be interesting to see the results.
