Baseball-Reference.com’s Play Index is free this week. PI lets you choose a ton of different parameters and perform queries on the entire B-Ref database. Most of the cool information I present on my blog comes from B-Ref. Have fun with it.

Baseboogle is a new site that takes advantage of Google’s search technology to help you find cool baseball research from baseball sites that “consistently advance the study and understanding of the game”.

John Walsh today published his outfielder arm ratings for 2007. Many fielding systems out there ignore fielding (including my 2007 player values), so this is a necessary addendum. Some interesting things I noticed:

  • Delmon Young’s arm was worth about 10 runs above average, making him a replacement level player last year, instead of worse-than-replacement player.
  • Shane Victorino’s arm was even better, making him a complete outfield stud.
  • Alfonso Soriano has the best arm, probably because runners are slow to learn. He had 22 assists last year and 19 in 2007. Stop running on Soriano, idiots!

Finally, in the spirit of cubic watermelons, here’s a “must have” for next Christmas.

Nice of Baseboogle to have already included this and Fangraphs in its list of sites that “consistently advance the study and understanding of the game”, natch!

Natch. I question my qualifications under the requirement of consistency, however.
